In April our family started a backyard garden and chicken coop. We live in Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii. Now that I am deeply in the organic gardening world, I’ve seen enough blogs and forums to know it’s time to share and create some community, and gain more knowledge.

We live on a ¼ acre in a close, suburban neighborhood in North Kona. Not really ag, to be sure. But for now, we are digging in – quite literally.

Circumstances have convinced us it is time to learn a little more about sustaining ourselves. We do, after all, live in an island in the middle of an ocean. It seems reasonable, and there are a lot of local efforts afoot in this regard, for the same reasoning. So we are gardening, with heirloom and local seeds and edible landscaping. We are newbies but devoted. I also want to learn about preserving food, caring for chickens and various other green endeavors.
